The MapleStory Classic Debt System is Nexon's penalty for real-money trading (RMT) and unfair trades in MapleStory Classic World. It is not a death penalty, a housing loan or an ordinary meso debt. An account Nexon finds involved in RMT, or in a trade with mesos or items that were obtained illegitimately, owes the mesos involved as debt. Until that debt is repaid, the account loses access to trading and shops. Nexon introduced the system in the unscheduled maintenance on October 22, 2026, the day after the Grand Launch. This page explains what triggers it, what it blocks and how to pay it off.
What triggers MapleStory Classic debt
Nexon's notice ties debt to two things: real-money trading, meaning buying or selling mesos or items for real money, and unfair trades that move illegitimately obtained mesos or items. The debt is the amount of mesos involved. Nexon's notice does not explain how it detects these trades, and it states no cap or interest on the debt, so this wiki does not guess at either. Buying mesos from a seller outside the game is the clearest way to end up in debt.
What you cannot do while in debt
A login pop-up shows the amount you owe every time you log in, and a Repay Illegal Mesos button stays on screen until the debt is cleared. While the debt is open, these are restricted:
| Feature | While in debt |
|---|---|
| Store Permit | Cannot be used |
| Hired Merchant | Cannot be used |
| Trading | Blocked, for both in-game items and Cash items |
| Cash Shop gifting | Blocked |
| Dropping items | Cannot drop items on the ground |
Everything else, including leveling, quests and the party quest, is not listed as restricted. Together the limits stop an indebted account from moving mesos or items to anyone else, which is the point of the system.
How to repay MapleStory Classic debt
- Go to a town. Repayment only works in town.
- Press the Repay Illegal Mesos button. The amount defaults to the full debt, or to all the mesos in your Item Inventory if you hold less than you owe.
- Pay any amount from 1 meso up to the mesos you carry. Partial payments are allowed, so you can pay in parts as you earn mesos by leveling and selling to NPC shops.
- When the full debt is paid, every restriction lifts.
Mesos in storage do not count toward a payment: only the mesos in your Item Inventory can be paid. If you believe the debt was applied by mistake, Nexon directs players to Player Support.
MapleStory Classic Debt System FAQ
What is the Debt System in MapleStory Classic World?
A penalty for real-money trading and unfair trades. Accounts involved owe the mesos in question and cannot trade, use shops or gift until the debt is repaid.
Can I still play while in debt?
Yes. Nexon's notice restricts trading, Store Permits, Hired Merchants, Cash Shop gifting and dropping items, not leveling or quests.
Can I pay off debt in parts?
Yes. Payments start at 1 meso and can be split, as long as you pay in a town with mesos from your Item Inventory.
When was the Debt System added?
In Nexon's unscheduled maintenance on October 22, 2026; the updates page lists that patch.
